Driving may seem like second nature but risks are everywhere

The biggest concern in the aftermath of a car accident should be your health and well-being. While the condition of your vehicle may be concerning, your health comes first.

Even a minor fender bender has the potential to result in many types of injury. Understanding the different types of injuries can help you receive the right medical care. These injuries could include:

  • Head injuries: A concussion is a common car accident injury, since you may strike your head in the crash. However, a traumatic brain injury could also occur, which is much more serious.
  • Back and neck injuries: These range from sprains and strains to fractures that cause paralysis. The more forceful the impact, the greater chance of a back or neck injury. A rear-end collision often leads to whiplash.
  • Broken bones: You can break almost any bone in a car accident. Your arms, legs, hands and feet are the most susceptible to injury, but you should never ignore pain in other parts of your body.
  • Soft tissue injuries: A soft tissue injury can be an ACL tear or muscle strain. Muscle and ligament damage can cause immediate pain and ongoing issues, if not treated quickly.
  • Abrasions: When your body is thrown around the cabin and debris is flying, you could suffer abrasions or deep lacerations.

How to treat car accident injuries

Since no two injuries and no two people are the same, it is impossible to know what kind of treatment is right. This is why you should call 911 after your accident, so an ambulance is immediately dispatched to the scene.

Once you reach the hospital, you will get a better idea of your injuries and the type of treatment required. Follow the advice of your medical team. The treatment they recommend can help you get over your injuries and hopefully avoid long-term complications.

When you can, contact your insurance company to file an accident claim. You may be able to learn more about the crash, like who was at fault, and how you can protect your legal rights.
