Klumpke Palsy can result from an injury during birth

Welcoming a new child is an event filled with joy and celebration. New mothers in Georgia have access to some of the best medical care in the world. However, medical errors due to negligence can cause serious injury to your newborn, which can affect him or her for the rest of their life. At Webb & Taylor, LLC, we often represent clients who file medical malpractice suits against the hospital or doctor as a result of birth injuries.

According to Bone and Spine, Klumpke Palsy typically involves paralysis of the muscles in the hand and forearm. A clawed hand is the classic representation of the condition. It often occurs during a difficult vaginal delivery, following a stretching injury. In some cases, the resulting damage may be avulsion of the root or tearing of the nerve.

Although tumors, an outgrowth on the first rib and intrauterine compression may cause Klumpke Palsy in rare cases, it is most commonly a result of one or more of the following:

  • Large birth weight
  • Maternal diabetes
  • Forceps delivery
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Assisted delivery with vacuum extraction

Nerve injury to the lower plexus may present with the elbow bent, wrist extended and the palm up. When recognized quickly, there are some methods that may reduce your child's increasing contractures by maintaining wrist alignment. Physical therapy and activities that require the use of the hand and arm may help improve limb performance as your son or daughter grows. Surgery may be appropriate for more severe cases.

If your child sustained injuries at the time of birth due to negligence inexperience, you might have grounds for a claim. Visit our webpage for more information on this topic.
