Should I look for a new doctor?

Most people prefer to stick with their family doctor for as long as possible. After all, this person likely knows your medical history inside and out, and you probably feel extremely comfortable in his or her presence after so many years. However, it makes sense to change doctors if you feel as though the care you're being afforded is less than satisfactory. In this case, Men's Health recommends looking for the following red flags, which usually mean that it's time to see another medical professional.

While medical knowledge is crucial for a physician to be competent, bedside manner is also important. A doctor must be present during the exam, meaning he shouldn't be distracted or rushing you out the door. Additionally, your doctor shouldn't need to ask for a rundown of your medical concerns on each and every visit. This information is available in your report, which can be reviewed before your visit actually starts.

A doctor should also take the time to listen to her patients. While you likely trust in her authority as a medical professional, your input must also be sought. In the same token, look out for a physician that discourages you from seeking a second opinion, especially when you've just been given a major diagnosis. She should also freely consult with specialists when it comes to your medical condition.

Lastly, consider how your doctor communicates with you. You should be able to get timely answers to questions you have after contacting the office. In general, you should expect a reply within two days or less, especially for pressing or urgent issues. You should also feel comfortable asking for explanations regarding procedures or medications you're being prescribed.
