Federal statistics show that large truck crashes have been on the rise in Georgia and around the country. A 2007 study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that around 44% of two-vehicle accidents involving large trucks are caused primarily by the truck or truck driver.

Drunk driving crashes are behind some 30 deaths every day in the U.S. To prevent drunk driving altogether, many automakers and safety experts are turning to technology. Georgia residents should know that a bill has been proposed that would make alcohol detection systems mandatory on all new vehicles by 2024. It's called the Reduce Impaired Driving for Everyone Act of 2019.

Jackknifing and how to prevent it

Truckers in Georgia may want to look over the following tips on how to avoid jackknifing. Jackknifing, where a truck folds in on itself, can occur in one of two ways. The trailer wheels can lose traction after harsh braking, known as trailer jackknifing, or the tractor wheels do the same after the driver suddenly accelerates, known as tractor jackknifing. Both are bad and are usually the result of driver error.

Drivers are using phones for riskier things than talking

Georgia residents should be aware that phone use continues to play a role in car crashes, even deadly ones. In 2017, some 800 crash fatalities were attributed to drivers who were using their phones while behind the wheel. Instead of talking, however, they were sending texts and engaging in other activities. Such activities are clearly more risky than talking because the latter is a cognitive distraction while the former constitutes both cognitive and visual distractions.

WHO report details widespread medical errors in all care settings
