Federal statistics show that large truck crashes have been on the rise in Georgia and around the country. A 2007 study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that around 44% of two-vehicle accidents involving large trucks are caused primarily by the truck or truck driver.
For the study, researchers conducted an in-depth analysis on 963 truck crashes that occurred over a 33-month period. They found that speeding was one of the top reasons that trucks caused collisions, playing a role in 23% of the accidents. They also determined that truck drivers who exceeded the speed limit were 670% more likely to blamed for an accident than those that were not speeding. Meanwhile, the researchers also found that 29% of trucks blamed for crashes had brake problems, which could be especially dangerous when combined with excessive speed. Finally, they found that 22% of truck accidents were associated with roadway unfamiliarity, meaning drivers failed to plan in advance for distance, routes or turns.
In order to prevent these types of crashes, the FMCSA recommends that truckers always obey the posted speed limit and reduce their speed by one-third on wet roads and by at least 50% on snowy surfaces. The agency also suggests that drivers properly maintain their vehicles and always take the time to familiarize themselves with new routes.
