Do you understand the dangers of distracted driving?

If you don't understand the severity and risks associated with distracted driving, there's a good chance you'll make a mistake. And if that happens, it could result in a serious accident that results in injury or death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claims nearly 3,000 lives every year. And that doesn't take into consideration incidents that only result in injuries and/or property damage.

On the plus side, when you understand the dangers of distracted driving it's easier to protect yourself.

Distracted driving comes in many forms, with all of them having one thing in common: Your attention is taken away from the road. Common types of distractions include:

  • Texting
  • Talking on your cell phone
  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Using your guidance system
  • Changing the radio station
  • Talking to passengers
  • Searching for something in your vehicle

Even though texting is the most talked-about driving distraction, anything that takes your attention away from the road is dangerous.

There's one last thing you should remember: Even if you're 100 percent focused on the road, this doesn't affect other drivers. If another driver is distracted, it greatly increases the risk of an accident.

A motor vehicle accident can impact your mental and physical health in many ways, along with your finances. And that's why you should take steps to protect your legal rights after a crash.
