How to contend with a reckless trucker on the interstate

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

When driving on the interstate, you should expect to see one truck after the next. While it’s quite common to share the road with these vehicles, trouble can develop if they are driving recklessly manner.

There are many steps you can take to contend with a reckless trucker, including the following:

  • Create space between your vehicles: This is vital, as the closer you are to a reckless driver, the greater chance there is of an accident. Create as much space as necessary to keep yourself safe and give you peace of mind.
  • Don’t engage them: For example, you may be tempted to yell at the trucker or cut them off to show that you’re angry. This has the potential to quickly escalate the situation, so avoid doing so.
  • Call for help: In extreme situations, it’s best to pull to the side of the road and call 911. Explain to the dispatcher what’s happening, providing as much information about the vehicle as possible. They can then dispatch police to the local area, who can then take action if they deem it necessary.

The biggest issue with reckless truckers is that they often cause serious accidents before you are able to deter them. Should this happen to you, focus on your own injuries, the health of your passengers and seek immediate medical treatment.

Your medical team can provide the necessary treatment, explain your injuries and help you understand your prognosis. All of this will help you when filing an insurance claim and taking other steps to hold the trucker responsible for their negligence.
