How to protect yourself on a long road trip

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

The more time you spend on the road, the more likely it is that you’ll run into trouble. So, as you plan a long road trip, it’s critical that you have a clear understanding of the steps you can take to protect yourself.

Here are three things you can do:

  • Prepare your vehicle: Don’t assume that your vehicle is in good enough condition to safely transport you to and from your destination. Hire a mechanic to take a closer look and conduct any necessary preventative maintenance.
  • Get plenty of sleep: If you don’t bank enough sleep before you leave, you could find yourself drowsy as you close in on your destination. Should your eyelids begin to droop, move to safety and get rest before taking to the road once again.
  • Watch for reckless drivers: You’re likely to come across many reckless drivers on a long road trip. This takes on many forms, ranging from illegal passing to excessive speeding to the failure to use turn signals when changing lanes. You want to keep as much space between yourself and these drivers as possible. This buffer can be the difference between an accident and maintaining your safety.

When you follow this advice, you’ll find it easier to protect yourself on a long road trip. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing what other drivers will do, which always puts you at risk of an accident.

If an accident happens, call 911 and receive medical treatment for your injuries. From there, file an insurance claim and formulate a plan for holding the negligent driver responsible for their actions.
