What happens when someone drives drunk?

Even though there are strict laws in place against driving under the influence of alcohol, many people continue to take a risk. Not only does this put them in jeopardy, but it does the same to every other person on the road.

Here are some of the many ways that alcohol can affect a person who is operating a motor vehicle:

  • Poor judgement: Without the ability to make sound decisionsor to react timely to an emergency situation, a person is more likely to cause an accident.
  • Drowsiness: Alcohol can result in drowsiness impairing reflexes or actually causing a person to fall asleep at the wheel.
  • Aggression: Some people become extremely aggressive when under the influence, and this affects the way they operate a motor vehicle. They'll yell at other drivers, violate the law and make poordecisions.

If you spot someone who appears to be under the influence, don't get too close. Create distance, keep your eye on the person and do whatever it takes to avoid trouble.

If you're injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, call 911 for help, and then take steps to protect your legal rights. By taking this action after the crash, you can protect your health and protect your future.
